One of Geelong's most popular and colourful attractions is the Alden Lodge Coral Gardens and Museum, 8km. south on Torquay Rd. The museum houses a lifetime collection of exotic shells, rare coral, and marine life from all over the world. Also featured is a colourful presentation of butterflies, insects and spiders. all clearly labelled and described. Equally fascinating is an antique plate collection; interesting brooches; historical documents; postcards, and memorabilia dating back to the 1860's. A royal and rare plate display is of great value and interest. In the 5 acres of grounds a remarkable floral display has been cultivated, the greenhouse Begonia and Fern exhibit is beautiful and the garden flower beds of Marigolds, Phlox, and other species are skilfully laid out among walkways. ponds, pergolas, a wishing well, and other features. A small chapel decorated with thousands of shells is a photographer's delight and blends beautifully with the peaceful atmosphere of the gardens. The garden flower display is open from February till Easter, when blooms are at their best; the museum is open daily from 9.30am.- 5.00pm., all year.
