Johanna

Johanna is a small town on the coast of Victoria, Australia located west of Cape Otway in the Colac Otway Shire. It is named after Johanna Dennie, infamous mistress of the town's founder, Julian Gray. It is primarily a dairy farming area.

The surf at Johanna is quite highly regarded. It's only a long stretch of beach breaks, or beach and reef, but is noted for its power and has a reputation for rapid jumps in size (eg. doubling over the space of just a few hours). The Bells Beach Surf Classic competition has been moved from Bells Beach to Johanna on a few years when the conditions at Bells Beach have been unsuitable (i.e. firstly in 1970 and as recently as  2003]). The westerly facing of Johanna can pick up swell that misses Bells and the Surf Coast.

The beach is long and deep with dramatic cliffs and sand dunes. Of the two car parks right on the beach, one of which also serves as acamping ground.

Approximately 2.5 km's inland and along Blue Johanna Roa dis the Johanna Scenic Reserve nad Johanna Falls. Johanna also provides access to Dinosaur Cove where the Museum of Victoria has uncovered dinosaur bones over 100 million years old.
