Geelong ClubGeelong Historic Buildings
The Geelong Club building is located at 74 Brougham Street, Geelong and was erected in 1888-1889 to Boom style classicism designs by Melbourne architect, C D Figgis. This two storey brick structure, of asymmetrical plan and facade with monumental verandah and broken pediment gable pediment was the first permanent meeting room of the Geelong Club founded in the late 1850s. The Geelong Club was formed in the 1850s by a group of Geelong wool merchants and district pastoralists and has important associations with early Geelong politics and commerce. The club building is a distinctive late Boom style Classicism style design by noted Ballarat and Melbourne architect, C D Figgis. The design reflects the strong influence of American domestic architecture of this period and heralds the later Federation Queen Anne style in Victoria. The Club is located in an important woolstores precinct.
