ANZ Bank (former) 9-11 Malop St Geelong Historic Buildings
The former London Chartered Bank is an important example of a mid nineteenth century bank. It is in original and complete condition and typically designed in the conservative classical style. This finely detailed structure is one of the most distinguished of the large group of bank buildings designed by noted Victorian architect Leonard Terry. The London Chartered Bank was established in Geelong at a time of great prosperity and reflects the influence of the goldrushes and the wool boom upon this settlement It was erected in 1859 by contractors Boynton and Conway and first opened for business on 21 May 1860. Melbourne architect Leonard Terry designed this conservative Classical style bank as a two storey structure with basement, using squared vesiculated basalt for the carcass, ashlar Barrabool sandstone for the facade and parapets and ornamentation derived from the Italian renaissance
