Southern Sand FlatheadThe southern sand flathead (P. arenarius) has a brownish-grey body with reddish-brown spots. They are alternately known as the slimy flathead, bay flathead or just 'flatties' and are common to many beaches, estuaries and inshore waters of southern Australia to a maximum depth of 100 metres. It grows to a maximum length of 55cm (approx. 1.3kg). Recreational anglers can catch flathead trolling lures along sand flats or sand drop-offs at the top of the run-out tide.
